Phase is a coming-of-age sci-fi feature film about a young pregnant woman named Ursula, who unexpectedly loses the stability of docked life. Ejected from Alexandria, a pioneering scientific space station that engineered the mass evacuation of the Earth, Ursula begins a search for the father of her unborn baby. Her journey soon leads her into the desperate choices of another cast off, Noah. Alone and together, they are forced to deal with the decisions that have brought them to this point including the tragic lasting memory of Ursula’s late mother.
During the earliest points of the pandemic, when lockdowns were in full effect and the prospects of the film industry were bleak, we began to write our first low budget, self-funded feature film. PHASE is a sci-fi drama that tells a human story of loneliness and the need for connection in the setting of space.
Instead of taking on the task of making a high tech spaceship, we created a homage to the 70s and 80s, a plasticky, retro-futurist nightmare in which space technology ceased to develop further. The immersion of space is translated through lighting, projections, and miniatures. When we were finished, we had a flight deck and living quarters complete with bunks, a kitchen, bathroom, airlock and dining area and 6-point integrated lighting to help maintain space-efficiency. A world with its own ideas, graphics, advertisements, clothing, branding, original music and even food.
